What Do I Do In The Event Of A Claim?

  • First thing to remember is that it is your duty to do what is necessary to protect your property from further damage.  “Reasonable costs” for temporary repairs are usually covered.
  • Take photos and keep receipts for any expenses that may be eligible for reimbursement.
  • Within a reasonable time period, you need to contact the company (at one of the numbers listed above) or our agency at 804-428-0000.  It is important to remember that when there is a catastrophic event claims are processed differently than a non-catastrophic claim.  It will take time to staff and process the claims and claims will be handled as quickly as possible based upon level of loss.  Be patient with your agent, your company and your claims adjuster as they are there to help you during this stressful time.
  • When reporting your claim, report your policy number/address and give a detailed description of the damage including if there were any injuries.  If your home is severely damaged and uninhabitable, tell the person to whom you are reporting the claim and ask for instructions on how to proceed.  (A power outage is not considered an uninhabitable home).
    • You should be contacted within 48 hours of reporting your claim, HOWEVER immediately after a storm or catastrophic event this could take a little longer.  Also, if your area is inaccessible due to storm damage, this may delay the claims process and the large number of claims may delay the adjusters in completing inspections.
  • You will have a deductible relating to your claim and you may have a named storm deductible which is usually larger than your deductible for non-storm related damage.
  • Check the terms of your policy for any debris or debris removal coverage that may be available to you.
  • Make sure you give a copy of any estimates for repair to your adjuster and likewise give a copy of the adjuster’s estimate to your contractor.  If the contractor has questions, they should contact the adjuster who prepared the estimate.  The adjuster’s estimate does not guarantee payment as the Company will determine what is covered and the amount to be paid.

GHT Insurance Agency is always here to help you with your needs. Do not hesitate to call the Agency with questions at 804-428-0000.
